This is course takes place entirely on location and includes an overnight hotel stay in the headquarters of horse racing – Newmarket. For hundreds of years the best racehorses in the world have been trained on the many surrounding gallops and this course offers some amazing opportunities get up close to these beautiful animals and athletes. There is nothing quite like being on the gallops just after dawn with literally hundreds of racehorses gathering around you. The early morning winter light can be stunning.

Your Newmarket experience starts on the evening of Tuesday 17th Febrary with a group dinner with Mark and Chris. It’s also a great chance to meet the group and for Chris and Mark to tell some of their amazing stories from the world of racing and from covering other sports around the world.

18th February - After a comfortable night’s sleep at the hotel there is an early morning start to head off for a morning photographing on the gallops in Newmarket. The first strings of horses gather just after dawn for their morning workout and you will be there to capture them with your camera – often just a few feet away from the fastest and highest prized racehorses in the world. Mark and Chris will be there next to you throughout, giving you all the technical and practical advice you need to capture some stunning images – whatever your level of photography. It’s a magical place to be – just you surrounded by millions of pounds of racehorses as they go through their morning’s work. Newmarket has gallops spread across all parts of the town and we will visit many of them throughout the morning, giving you many opportunities to get some amazing shots.

You will then visit the beautiful Pegasus stables of leading trainer James Fanshawe for a fabulous private tour. This is one of the most picturesque stables in all of Newmarket and you will be able to photograph freely as the early morning horses and riders return from the gallops and as the staff prepare for the second string of horses to head out. This is a unique opportunity to witness and photograph a leading yard at work where you can get some great close up images of the horses and the staff at Fanshawe’s Group 1 winning yard.

You will then depart for a further private visit to John Ryan's stables in the heart of Newmarket.  Here you will be shown and advised on how to take an official portrait of a racehorse for publication and future record, known in the racing world as it’s “confirmation”.  This is how best to photograph and show off the horse’s proportions.

The course is being run in association with the Nikon School and there will be lots of pro Nikon kit to try including D4s and D4 bodies, as well as the new 400mm 2.8 lens. The fee includes overnight hotel accommodation in Newmarket but not dinner on the 3rd, which will be around £20 per head.
